Fuck You, The Talko

Like many of us, I ended up on a Youtube downward spiral tonight. You know how it is when you're pillaging the dregs and already half asleep, but the effort of actually getting in bed is just too much. I hit rock bottom sifting through content by The Talko and the little auto play tab had me watching a video entitled 10 Makeup Trends Men Find Unattractive.

The click bait is real and although I don't subscribe to the notion that a man's opinion has any bearing on how I look, I'll admit I was curious. I watched it and of course, I was annoyed, verging on furious. I was just going to log off and go to sleep, but then I decided to see what similar content they had to offer. Which was a mistake.

It was filled with videos like these:

Fuck You, The Talko

Fuck You, The Talko

Fuck You, The Talko

Fuck You, The Talko

Fuck You, The Talko

Fuck You, The Talko

Fuck You, The Talko

Fuck You, The Talko

Is it coincidental that most of these videos feature only women and yet are somehow aimed at women?

Let's address the one I watched first of all. Apparently men hate things like having long nails, excessive eye makeup, and unusual lipstick colours. They prefer a more natural look on women. I'd imagine they're the same type of men who say things like "take her swimming on the first date" while they wear the same dank shorts for a month and smell like a verruca sock. They're also the same type of people who comment on women who don't wear makeup at all. Saying they look sloppy, or like they're ill. Of course, The Talko try to offset this by having some peppy narrator reading from a poorly written script, uttering such lines as  "oh don't worry, you don't have to do what a man says" which translates as "you don't have to but why aren't you". So fuck you for that, The Talko.

The video title that pissed me off the most was 10 Celebs Who Went From Cute To Puke. I mean wow. They even included two pictures of Bella Thorne for the cover photo, as if the world isn't giving her enough hate as it is right now. Well done, grown ups of the internet, for shitting on a teenager who clearly is going through something. You must be so proud of each and every one of those views based on your disgusting content that literally says people look like vomit.

Let's discuss this video cover photo:

I guess we're openly painting women as petty and competitive with each other now? I have never once looked at a photo of the seriously beautiful Scarlett Johansson (or ANY other woman for that matter) and thought "well there's a little too much powder on her face, she's ugly as fuck". Isn't that exactly what they say men do in their previous videos. So it's okay to literally come at women from every direction because no matter what they do someone will find fault with who they are and how they look?

The last video topic I want to bring up is this one:

Fuck me, this made me angry.

I didn't watch the video because I will not allow my view to monetise this actual trash. People with dwarfism in fulfilling relationships are odd? An overweight woman can't find love with a man of average weight? Are you actually kidding? As a society, we are slowly opening up the possibility of people not being the typical white bread, regular straights of the world and we still have videos pointing at the ginger kid in the room, telling them they're different.

The saddest thing about this for me is the amount of views on each video. Which means people aren't only watching them, they're doing it en mass. So we are effectively paying The Talko to continue to make this literal unresearched, uneducated, anti-feminist, misogynistic, abelist, downright rude and unethical garbage. How can people possibly sleep well at night knowing they make money by openly ridiculing people for no other reason than they can? Just because someone is a celebrity does not mean the public owns them and every little thing about them is open to dissection by people who have nothing better to do with their lives.

I mean, imagine going to university to study journalism and ending up working for a Youtube channel that discusses celebrity weight as if its a matter of crucial importance. I would feel sorry for them, but they're getting paid to come up with this stuff.

And because it's on the internet it's open to anyone and everyone who stumbles upon it. So teenage girls who think this is normal will watch it. At 15 I had the internet but it was a primitive beast compared to the monster it has become. My source of gossip and makeup information came from Shout! magazine, or a Take a Break pilfered from my mum. This was back in the early 00s and it was normal to see the world shitting all over women for every little thing. Your hair is too long, it's too short, you're overweight, you're too skinny, eat a burger, eat a salad, your teeth are crooked, your nose is too wide, your boobs are too small, you had a boob job so you're fake, you're too ambitious, you have no drive, why are you working if you have kids, why are you content with being a stay at home mother, you're bossy, you're too passive, the list goes on and on and on - and to have ignored this type of media for more than a decade, only to find out that it still very much exists and if anything has gotten WORSE is depressing.

It might seem a bit dramatic to be angry about the lack of respect for women as a whole, based on watching a couple of terrible Youtube videos. It just goes to show that when it comes to being a female, or identifying as one, you're damned if you and you're damned if you don't. Content like this is never going to help. So fuck you, The Talko and everyone like you. You should be ashamed.
