Kiko Milano Matte Liquid Lipstick

Just before Christmas I decided that I needed a blue lipstick. Needed it. Had to have it. Couldn't live without it. I do have one from MUA but I don't like the formula - it's too patchy to work with and I'm considering throwing it out. So on a last minute shopping trip to Warrington, we passed by the Kiko store and I popped in to have a gander at the sales and came out with this:

Kiko Milano Matte Liquid Lipstick

The colour is the exact shade of blue I was looking for and it was priced at a decent £7.50. The real question though, was how it wore on the lips and I was kind of sceptical based on previous blue lippies I've owned. These types of shades tend to be patchy and difficult to work with. But I didn't let it put me off.

On New Years Eve, we decided to go shopping with some Christmas money and it was my time to shine. I did the rest of my makeup and slicked on some heavy duty lip balm, then applied the lipstick. Two dips into the tube and very minimal finessing, that's it. And when I say minimal, I mean I BARELY had to do anything. The applicator is a cross between a doe foot and the NYX Lingerie type, but a little bit fluffier. I really liked it. This was so easy to apply and so heavily pigmented. It dried down within a minute and was a tiny little bit patchy, so I touched up the spots on the centre of my lips and called it a day.

This was where things started to go downhill.

This formula allows for it be built up, but I would not recommend it. It gets that thickness that makes you very aware you're wearing a lot of product. It also settles into every single line on your lip and does not have much elasticity to it. Despite wearing a lot of lip balm underneath, my lips felt dry and tight. But I can forgive a drying lippie if it's got staying power.

I put this on at 11am. We nipped to a cafe on the way home and picked up a small tray bake cake each. I had maple and pecan, delicious. I took two bites and noticed blue all over the cake and all over my hands. The first chance I got, I looked in the mirror and I had sad clown frown lines. I fixed those up, finished my cake and then assessed the damage.

Not the most flattering photograph. But you can see where it's smudged and broken up from a small amount of food and a swig of Ribena. It's not ideal. Later on, we went to Burger King and that's where things really went to shit. I ended up taking it off with a napkin and some cleanser I'd picked up when we were shopping. Removal is an absolute chore. I used an oil based cleanser and it took forever to take off, staining my lips in the process. The fiance said I looked like a corpse, which I'm not totally opposed to, to be honest.

I didn't take a photograph as I dropped my phone and smashed it a tiny bit, therefore panicking over that for about 15 minutes. Because anxiety. By the time I remembered I was supposed to do another update, it was all gone but for the stains which faded over the course of the day.

My lips were so dry and dehydrated and even when I've used liquid lipsticks on several days on the bounce, they've never been this bad. The only time I ever experienced a similar reaction was with the Kylie Liquid Lipstick which I passed on to my sister.

I think I would try another colour in this range as they are beautifully pigmented and so very easy to apply. They'd be great in light shades that aren't so obvious when they wear off or smudge when eating and drinking. But for the dark shades, its a hard pass.

  1. It's a shame that it didn't last because it was a really pretty shade!

    1. I was gutted! But never mind, there are always more lippies to try.
