2017 Favourites and Regrets

2017 Favourites and Regrets

I'm not going to lie, I've bought a lot of makeup and skin care this year. Compared to 2016, its probably about 10 times as much. It's a bit excessive and by a bit, I mean very. So, I have some things I became obsessed with and some that were tried out once then went to live with someone who appreciated them. Seeing as it's the end of the year, I thought I might do a round up both my favourites and the things I regret buying - but instead of listing everything I loved and hated, I thought I might pick one of each from every month. Some of these weren't reviewed, but the ones that were I'll link.

This was one of the first things I bought myself this year. I love it for applying contour when I'm going for something dramatic on nights out or special events. It's not expensive, it works really well, it's super soft and a staple in my makeup routine.

Regret

I HATED this foundation. It was oily, sank into every pore and brought up dry patches on my skin that I didn't even know I had. For the brand, it was a massive let down.

If you're looking for a good all-rounder that has neutral, shimmer, matte and glitter shades - this is the one. Every colour is pigmented and blendable. The neutral shimmers are my current go-to for daily makeup looks.

While I don't hate this lipstick, I do regret buying it - despite loving it at first. I very quickly realised there are so many better products out there. The colour is absolutely stunning but the formula is terrible. It's patchy and doesn't stay put. It's also incredibly drying and doesn't even cover the inner part of your lips.

I don't own many skin care tools because, let's face it, you don't really need much more than your hands. But this is a staple in my routine. I use them when scrubbing my face - no more than 3 times a week - with a dab of L'Oreal Pure Clay Glow Scrub. It makes exfoliating quicker and easier - plus it's very simple to clean, just rinse.

This. Did. Nothing.

Despite being super cheap and not really talked out, this mascara is great. It gives crazy length, it's really volumising, doesn't smudge or flake and is easy to remove. It's only recently that I've seen it available in shops, as for some reason it disappeared for a while, so I'll be stocking up again.

Oh, how I wanted to love this. It smells amazing but that's it. The problem isn't with the product itself, the eyeshadows are fine - except the darker shades - but I never, ever use it. I can count on one hand the number of times I've reached for it since April. Most of those times I put it back down as well. It's a shame because it really is a pretty palette and it cost so much money.

This was cheap, cheerful and did what it said on the tin. My hair smelled lovely using this, and it lasted for a good few months. The only problem is Superdrug have stopped stocking it.

Regret

This is definitely the worst thing I've bought all year. I despise this foundation. The colours are weird, the finish is too drying and streaky - no matter how much you blend - it doesn't last anywhere near 5 hours, let alone 24 and it brought out every little bit of dry skin.

I love this colour. Its absolutely stunning. The formula isn't the best in the world, but its one of my favourite lipsticks in my collection right now. If you'd like to know more about my current lippie loves, click here.

Ugh, this was a waste of time, money and effort. It did nothing and hurt.

This is the second mascara in this list and it's absolutely amazing for the price. Its literally £2. It doesn't smudge or flake, it gives a nice natural curl to the lashes with some slight volume. Mine is dried up and really needs binning, but until I can get to Wilko for a replacement, I'm keeping hold.

Sheet masks are terrible and no one can convince me otherwise. This was one was just gloopy and sticky and ugh, I hated every second of it. There was no difference to my skin afterwards either. Not worth it.

This stuff is gorgeous. It smells like roses, a tiny little bit goes a very long way and it leaves my skin soft and hydrated. It's also an excellent primer before makeup - even for my combination skin. I use this twice a week and my skin literally glows for days afterwards.

Regret

This is supposed to replicate back combing, or give texture to very fine hair. I didn't notice this when I bought it, so it's my own fault, but it's absolutely horrific. My hair tangled like an absolute bitch and no amount of brushing or conditioning could fix it completely. It took me two days to brush out the tangles from one single application. I'm not heavy handed with dry shampoo either. Never again.

I bought this back in September and at first, I wasn't thrilled with it. But lately, I've been loving it. I'm at the point now where I should throw it out but it's hard to come by in the UK. It's natural but it has some volume - no clumps at all. It's easy to build, long-lasting and although it's not really waterproof, its sweat proof and heat proof.

Regret

I really disliked this, but the finish is lovely. It's too glittery and the colour range is just plain strange. Light Porcelain is white and VERY pink but Ivory is literally orange. They are the two lightest shades. It doesn't last on the skin and the coverage is sheer, and too shimmery to build. I'd imagine it'd be nice if you're one of the four people in the world who fit into their shade range and also have perfect skin.

This makes your skin so soft and glowy. I saw a dramatic reduction in blemishes when I used this consistently - I just need to get back into that routine!

This looks so beautiful but it's terrible. It dries down too quickly to blend and even when wet it takes off the foundation underneath. So sad.

I bought this as a treat in September, but only used it a few days before my birthday and I fell in love. You apply a small amount to the skin, leave it to set for a minute then literally roll it in circles until it balls up and flakes off your skin. You're left with skin so soft, clear and exfoliated you wonder how you survived so long without this peel.

Regret

Oh, the waste of money. I wanted to love this, but it's not very good. It smudges terribly, flakes off terribly and the wand applies (you've guessed it) terribly. I've only used this a handful of times and it's now being utilised as a final coat for that last bit of lash drama when I know I won't be wearing it for long periods of time.

This is probably the thing I adore the most that I've bought myself this year. I love this travel friendly kit. The contour is slightly warmer than I'm used to but it works perfectly. The highlights are natural but still glowy. Everything blends beautifully. I'm obsessed.

Regret
Honestly, I didn't buy anything this month that I regret. I barely bought anything because it's Christmas and almost all of my money goes on my loved ones at this time of year. It seems like the few things that I did buy were wise choices. Yay me.

Honourable Mention
2017 Favourites and Regrets
I decided not to include this as November's Favourite because it didn't seem fair to choose the entire thing. I couldn't pick which shadow or liner I thought was a standout - I'm head over heels for all of them.

What are you favourites and regrets of 2017?
