Birchbox June 2018

I'm the first to admit that I'm not the most patient of people, so subscription boxes are a nice idea but in actuality, I spent the majority of May awaiting the sneak beak on Birchbox's Instagram. And when I finally saw what I might potentially be getting, I felt a little bit deflated as one of the options was something I've already got (the Balance Me face wash)...which I did like but I didn't want to receive again so soon.

Otherwise, I was pretty excited to see what I might be getting. Especially as I had 2 extra free samples for reviewing the May box and the June box was a collectors tin, celebrating 5 years of Birchbox - plus an additional treat to mark the occasion.

From the Instagram photo I assumed this probably meant I was going to be receiving teabags as the 6th sample. And I....just no 😞 I do not want to receive anything edible in a beauty subscription box. If I wanted teabags (and I really do not) I'd go to ASDA.

The product choice this month was an Ella Eden Compact Eyeshadow which apparently retails for £12.99. I chose the shade Julia, which looked to be a pink champagne shimmer. I do like to have an abundance of these and since the other colour option was a somewhat sparkly brown that looked, shall we say, less than pigmented, I hoped I'd picked the best option.

On to June's box...

1. Whittard of Chelsea Tea Bags
I promptly gave these to my boyfriend. I don't like tea and will never use them so it would be a waste for me to keep them. I was definitely right about the hint and it was such a disappointment.

2. Benefit The POREfessional Pearl Primer
I tried the original about 7 or 8 years ago and I don't remember liking it. This version is pink and when I tested it on my hand, it felt like velvet. I think I'm actually going to enjoy it. Which is awkward as I don't fancy replacing it at almost £30 a tube...

3. Pro Blo Group Mask Me Hydrating Hair Mask
I didn't have to wait long for my first sachet sample. I do like a good hair mask but these are impossible to use in the shower. A little squeezy tube would've been so much easier. Either way, I'm more or less okay with it.

4. Polaar Velvety Sun Fluid Face & Body SPF30
Sun cream is fine, I suppose. I'm not really an avid user (sorry). I'll most likely end up using it as it's been suspiciously sunny this year. But honestly, I'm not a big fan of items like these in beauty boxes. It fits with the summer theme but at the same time.....no.

5. Number 4 Jour d'automne Smoothing Balm
This smoothes frizz, protects against heat and humidity. SOLD.

6. Ella Eden Compact Eyeshadow in Julia
I wasn't impressed with this until I swatched it and it's so pretty! It's very subtle and a bit clumpy but nothing that isn't easy to work with. I think I'd prefer this as a highlight to an eyeshadow, but that's not a problem at all. This is definitely my favourite thing in the box.

In all honesty, I wasn't over the moon about this box. Sure you get a big brand name like Benefit and the tin is lovely but I don't know, it didn't wow me. Out of the 3 boxes I've purchased, I've had issues with them all. The first one was supplied with an empty product, in the second one of the products had leaked on everything and in the third I didn't received the promised extra samples for the review. I also think using teabags as a sample in a beauty box is a cop out. It just seems like Birchbox can't get their act together and it's a bit sad. It's also making me reconsider subscribing to their service.

I think I'll give Birchbox one more month and after that, if I'm still not excited about it, I might cancel. Let's see how July goes.

  1. I stopped my subscription with Birchbox because I felt the samples are a bit too small for me to test. I get it it's cheap but I want to try something I can make up my mind if I want to buy the full size.

    1. That's one of the problems I'm having. I thought the sample sizes would be enough to make a decision but they're jokingly small (except for the makeup products I've had). Are there any other boxes you would recommend?
